SAfri: Southern African Agrarian Humans Suite

SAfri1.pngThese are runnable models or simulations that can be used to learn about anthropological theories regarding human family structures, survival, and sustainability. These models need allot of improvement (discussion and feedback is VERY welcome on the "discussion" tab) mostly because the NetLogo language and platform has evolved faster than the models. They are based on the Wolf-Sheep Predation Model that tries to see what conditions will produce a stable ecosystem without extinction of humans or cows. Eventually the models should provide insight into the following research questions:
  • What is the smallest size a group of agrarian humans can be and long term survivability is still probable?
  • How is the above mentioned number effected under different family structures?
  • How does the herding of cattle (instead of just competing with them or hunting them) effect the answer to the above questions?
The SAfri models currently cover the following family structures:
  • Polygamy including:
    • 1 male mating with multiple females (Polygyny)
    • 1 female mating with multiple males (Polyandry)
  • Any combination (No Marriages)
  • Monogamy: 1 male mating with 1 female
Some documentation for teachers is included.

They will also run in certain web browsers and on the vast majority of computers that have Java 1.4 or above installed.

Proposed Future changes:

Short Term:
  • Update code to the current version of the NetLogo language
  • Add homes, day and night, herding behaviors, childhood stages and parenting, random disasters and good fortune.
Long Term:
  • Perhaps add child development issues and natural diversity and genetic mutations, different terrains, etc.
